Laying the Foundation Stone for the Grammar School 1912

Way back in 1912 the first stone to be laid for the new part of the Grammar school.In the background you can see the buildings going up Church brow and on the right hand side the old cottages in Well Terrace that were knocked down around the 1940's

Earl of Derby about to launch into an opening speech.The original grammar school was at the top of Church Brow next to St.Mary's church,which first opened way back in 1558.Then in 1834 it was decided to be taken down brick by brick and rebuilt on it's present spot on York Street.
