Nutter was supposed to be in hiding at Downham Old Hall when she was wanted
for Witchcraft in the 17th century.Alice Nutter was eventually tried at Lancaster
for probably nothing more sinister than being a spinster who was a vegetarian
and owned a black cat.That was always enough for Mr.Witchfinder General Esq.It
is said that she had a secret chamber at Downham Hall and use to make her
way over the bridge to Malkin Tower,the haunt of the Pendle Witches.Downham
Old Hall these days is a farm house.
